Styles of Conducting Music
Hello, my name is Duane Carter and, on behalf of Expert Village, I will be talking about band conducting. As I mentioned before, there are primarily two styles of conducting, choral conducting and instrumental conducting. Choral conducting almost always utilizes the hands for conducting. This way the conductor can shape the music while keeping time, as it is easier to shape the music using just the hands. Instrumental conducting, on the other hand, almost always utilizes the baton. As I mentioned, the baton was much easier for keeping a strict sense of time. Our focus in this series will be instrumental conducting. Instrumental conducting utilizes the baton to indicate the beats per measure. These beats are formed in the air in a beat pattern that is clearly visible by all. We will, over the next few videos, demonstrate, I will demonstrate these beat patterns so you can understand exactly what I am talking about.
