Hi, this is Eric Sterns with Expert Village. We're discussing making some traditional leather work. We're working on a traditionally styled knife sheath, and right now we're going to talk about the knife itself and how to protect that in the process of making the sheath. What we want to do, is you want to take the selected knife, whichever knife you've chosen, and part of the process is that it needs to be in the sheath while the sheath dries, so we want to protect it in some way. What I'll usually do is I'll coat it with like a 3-in-1 or a gun oil of some kind. So what I'll do is I'm going to take like a little bit of the oil and kind of put it on there and move it over the blade, kind of don't worry about putting too much on, but you want to coat the blade in the oil so that when you put it inside the sheath later on, you'll be able to leave it there. If you don't coat it, depending on what kind of steel it is, it could come out with like rust or some kind of light corrosion and you may have to go over the blade with like a wet, a real fine wet sandpaper, or you might have to hone it again, and you want to avoid any unnecessary maintenance on your blade if possible, so this protects it.
