How to Play a High Hat Stand

JOEL SIEGEL: Another aspect of the hi-hat it actually doesn't have anything to do with the cymbals themselves--this is kind of an old school technique. You haven't--you'll see it a lot in jazz, and that's where you're playing the actual stand itself. This is just another sound that you can get. You're always trying to explore with music. You want to see as many--try and find as many sounds as you can, as many colors and textures. So, the easiest way to do this is if you develop your traditional grip at all, striking this stand like this; and the most used context that I've seen this used in is keeping a two-beat in jazz or swing. It sounds like this.
