Tips on Using Symbols as a Distress Signal

Hi this is Eric Sterns with Expert Village and we are talking about visual ground signaling for emergency situations. Right now we are getting ready to cut some miniature symbols out for ground air signaling to get an idea of what those look like. The next symbol we are going to cover out is the N. This is the symbol for no or negative and this is an indication from ground air that we don't need assistance or it is a negative response to any question asked previously. We are going to go ahead for purposes and I need another strip. We are going to go ahead and cut another strip of the material and once again this is something that you are going to do outside with a knife, something to keep in mind with this is these strips should be about four to six feet wide and about ten to twelve feet long in the actual application so that they are easily seen from the air. Once again you want the edges to be as crisp and clean as possible so you are going to simply arrange your strips so that they form an N. There is your third symbol. The fourth symbol that we are going to be covering is a Y. The Y is an indication that you are answering yes or affirmative to a question asked and is going to be done by simply taking your tarps, hopefully your whole tarp because you want this to be a whole signal. There is your Y symbol or your affirmative. The next and last symbol that you want to cover is actually a directional arrow and this is an indication that you have proceeded in the direction that the arrow is pointed which is extremely critical if you have decided to walk out to seek assistance, then you will be able to give people flying by some indication of where you went or at least a direction of where to search for you. We will take the material and simply shape it in the form of a directional area. These are the five symbols that are universally recognized by most search and rescue as well as emergency personnel as well as military and law enforcement. There will be no question as to your intention if you use these symbols.
