Hi this is Eric Sterns with Expert Village. We are discussing visual signaling in emergency situations and what we are talking about now is bright contrasting colors with respect to shelter and other emergency material that you choose. For shelter purposes regardless of whether you use a tarp or a tent, choose the brightest colors that you can preferably in the neon or fluorescent range. This allows you to be signaling passively which is just by the simple act of putting up a shelter, you are automatically signaling because what you are putting up is in such contrast with anything in the surrounding area. In addition you should consider this with respect to your clothing choice and your winter coat, your rain poncho, etc. Your rain poncho could be orange it could be yellow. The coats that you use could be fluorescent orange or red as well as the hats. A good way to get these is if you visit any store or company that sells hunting supplies. Hunters are always concerned with being seen so that they are not mistaken for deer and they have a lot of fluorescent colors so this is a good area to look at.
