Playing Tone Sounds on Djembe African Drums

MAN: The next sound is the tone. Some people say open tone and this is the middle pitch of the djembe. The bass is your lowest, the tone is your middle sound and that's made by sliding your fingers to the edge of the drum, no thumbs. You do not want your thumbs to touch the drum because they'll knock into the wood and that will hurt. So, again, your hand is flat. And you have to come off the drum because this is a goat skin. It's very thin and it's very tight. You have to come off the drum. You see? And what I do is I make sure that my hand lifts off the skin; otherwise, it'll sound like this. It's a very choked sound. That's not the sound for the djembe. The djembe wants to be a very open sound like this. That is the open tone for the djembe.
