Tips on Djembe African Drums

MAN: Here I am with my djembe. It's made with the goat skin and it's very, very tight, strung up with rope and it is one solid piece of wood. This type of wood is called Lenke wood, and you can see it's the same consistency throughout the drum which means it's from the exact middle of the tree. This is a very, very, nice piece of wood. The djembe has three different sounds. It has a low sound, "bass," middle sound called "tone," and a highest sound called "slap". And together, all those sounds make the music. Usually, we have three djembes in the orchestra with the dundun, [PH] sangban, and kenkeni, so that's six drummers. You can have more, but that's the basis of the music. It is also meant to be played outside, so it's very loud. And sometimes, the drums can be very heavy.
