Playing a Dun Dun African Drum

MAN: Here I am with the dundun drum or "dun-un" drum. This drum is a big drum and you have to be very strong to play it. We use a bigger stick and you got to use your whole arm. Again, you're relaxed and generally, we don't the muffle stroke, that quiet pressing on this drum. We more just do the open sound. You see, it's a very big drum. And the stick is just naturally rebounding, just bouncing off the head of the drum. And, again, it's played with the bell. It's a very physical instrument and demands a lot of energy but it is the base of the entire orchestra so it's very important.
