Choosing a Songba African Drum

MAN: So, here I am with the [PH] sangban drum which in the dundun family is usually the most important part as far as the melody of the music. You have the one bell and you have one stick. And you have two sounds on the drum. You have an open sound and then you have a closed sound which is made by gently pressing the stick against the skin. And together, that makes the music. And traditionally, people could stand up with this in the ensemble or you could play it sitting down. It's, again, made of cow's skin, [PH] Malina wood and the bell made out of iron and together that produces the West African sound. So, these are very vibrant rhythms that are played in Guinea, West Africa. And they can be vey loud. They can be fast. They can be slow. They can be for all types of occasions.
