ATHENA REICH: In this clip, I'm going to talk about how to market yourself to press if you are not able to afford to hire a publicist. As you can see, I got a ton of press. Most of this is from publicist but some of it is from me actually marketing myself to publicists. It's not that hard especially when you go to small towns to get big articles. This for example was from Taos in New Mexico which is not a big town so I was the big, exciting thing that week and I got huge article. It happens all the time. Now, what do you say when you're contacting press? You want to excite them about yourself. I usually write a nice email. I say, "I'm interested in being, uh, listed or featured." I say some of my--name drop if you've opened for somebody. "Oh, I've opened for Jim Carrey and Sarah McLachlan. I'm releasing my fifth CD. I'm here from New York City." Push yourself. Don't make it too long. Please, make it three short paragraphs. Market yourself to the press. Do it.
