How to Follow Up on a Music Tour

ATHENA REICH: In this clip, I'm going to talk about the importance of follow up. It can be really disheartening to call up a venue and have them not be interested or the manager is not there after 10 times that you've called, when they told you, "Oh, they'll be here tomorrow at 2:00." and they're not. It can be disheartening. But look, these are very busy people who are inundated with talented artists calling them all the time. You can't take it personally. You have to follow up all the time. So, you just follow up. "Hi, this is..."--I do a little bit of a guilt-trick. It kinda works. I say, "Hi, this is Athena Reich and this is the third time I've called. I'm looking to talk to Susan and I was told that if I call today at 2:00, that I would get a hold of her." It's harder to say "No" to that one. They know that I'm not just calling the first time. I don't say it in a mean way but a little bit of guilt-trick-trip, trust me, it works. And then I just say, "You know, I've been calling a few times and I'm really excited to play at your venue." Just be insistent. Be upbeat. Don't take it personally. These are busy people who are concerned about 7 million things in the managing of their restaurant. Follow up, follow up, follow up. I can't emphasize it enough.
