Attaching Thread to a Hook to Make Clouser Minnows

ALVIN DEDEAUX: All right, now that we got our hook in the vise, the next thing is attaching our thread. We're going to start it out up here close to the eye of the hook, just kind of lay it across there, make a couple of wraps back toward the bend of the hook, trap that thread. Okay. Then, we're going to go ahead and clip that off real close to where you wrapped it. And with this fly, we're not going to wrap it back quite as far. We want to wrap it maybe to about here. We just want to have enough room that we can tie all of our materials on and get a nice smooth head because we want to attach that dumbbell eye right where we stop. We don't want that thing to go too far back because if it's too close to the back of the hook, it won't ride right. It won't ride with the hook point up. And if we move it too far forward, then we'll be kind of crowded trying to get all of our materials tied on and the head wrapped off nice. So, right about there, maybe a third of the way back from the eye toward the bend of the hook, not the point of the hook, but a third of the way back to here is about the right place on this Clouser Minnow. There are no rules. You could put it a little bit further back if you want it or you could cram it all the way up near the eye, but typically, you get a better fly if you go about there.
