Marking Turning Points for Wood Lathing

Alright we've got the beginning and end points. Now with these little turnings here we are going to mark these on the stock and we're going to place these with a pencil also so we are going to know where to make this cut, before and after this and before and after this one. The rest of it is just shaping the handle. Once we have the pencil marks in we cut it on, make it a little bit bigger so I can see them better when it turns. With marking we want to make sure that we get the right diameter and they are called calipers and they are going to give us the size we need. We don't want to go lower than this, we want to be right on. We set the calipers and we know when to stop turning. When this fits over the stock, we know we're there. Once we've cut down to that dimension we know that we are ready to start the rest of our turning. We've got our marks set, we know what our depth is and we know where they're spaced. We are going to finish up now by starting the next part of the process and that is cutting our little ornamental beads on here.
