Rounding With a Wood Lathe

Okay, we've got everything all chucked up, everything's set, everything's tight. Now we're going to use our gouge. This is a gouge, it's got a "u" shape to it on the end, it's fairly sharp, and this is a big heavy tool, it's going to take off a lot of meat real quick. What we want to do is take this square piece of wood and make it round. Once we do that, we can continue the process, but first I'll show you how to do that. Turn the lathe on, and bring our speed up, about 800,000 rpm's. We'll start from one end and work our way across. With each pass we're taking off a little more wood. We don't want to take it all off at once, we just want to take it off a little bit at a time. Once we get to where we think we're about round, we're going to cut it off, take a look at it. There's just a little bit of area here where we've got a couple flats down here at the end, but for the most part we're getting round. Turn it on, and we'll clean up this end a little bit more. Now we've got all sides are gone, we're nice and round. That ends the part of the rounding, now we've got a square turned into a round, and from here the process gets a little finer. We'll fine the turning.
