Tips on Palmering in Fly Tying

ALVIN DEDEUX: The first thing we're going to do here is what we call palmering this material on the hook. Basically, that just means wrapping the material on the hook. Usually, you're thinking about doing it with the hackle feather but it could also be some chenille or some other type of material. So we've got our thread attached to the hook and now we've just attached our material to the hook, our hackle. We're going to bring the thread back up toward the front of the hook. And then basically, palmering is just this wrapping this material around the hook, and I'm going to go this way back toward the hook shank. And normally, I'd have some other materials underneath that feather that I'm palmering on. But basically, that's what palmering of material on the hook is. Get back up to the front of the hook, take my thread and I'll lock that little piece of hackle down that I just palmered up toward the front and clip it off, being careful not to clip that thread off. Maybe we could do a couple more wraps just to make sure I got it nice and secure. And that is a palmered hackle on a bare hook.
