Hi, I'm Michael Payne, owner of the Academy of Martial Arts, speaking on behalf of Expert Village. The topic that I will discuss is what to look for in a good martial arts school. If you take a drivers education course, the first thing that you do is learn about the car. Once you learn how things work or operate, then you will be ready to start driving. You would not want to take drivers ed, and on the very first day, the instructor said "OK, lets go; lets get on the highway". You?d start driving without knowledge and of course, this could be very dangerous. In the same respect, I believe that students should learn how to kick, punch, and block, first. They should know how to control those techniques, so that, when they do actually put on their safety gear, they will have an idea of what they are doing. I would avoid a martial arts school which makes you spend a lot of money on sparring equipment. Having kids start sparring right away, even as a white belt, could be scary. This is because, there are going to be kids who are very aggressive and there are a lot of kids who are passive. This is a good way to scare off a lot of people. They will not gain the benefits of martial arts that they would otherwise.
