Teach Your Puppy to Walk on a Leash: Part 2

Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and today we’re going to talk about puppies. We’re on how to teach your puppy to walk on a leash, part 2. Now we’ve gone outside and this is definitely not the ideal situation. We’re at the kennel, there are big trucks going by, there’s lots of smells, but I will be able to show you how to teach little Barto to walk on a leash, now we’re on the concrete. Little puppy. Good boy. Now I did that because he was pulling on the leash and I don’t want the leash to get tight. So we’re on the concrete instead of the grass to try to set him up to succeed, because the grass smells a lot more interesting than the concrete. So to get Barto to walk, I’m going to employ several tactics I’ll make a lot of turns, I’ll talk to him, make kissy noises, I’ve got the little noisy hedgehog and some treats with me to encourage him to come. I can also use a lot of body language. If I simply bend down, little puppy, it usually gets him going. So I want to keep the leash completely loose and encourage him to come with me without pulling, good puppy. So he’s, good. Lots and lots of turns, completely loose leash, good boy, very nice, good boy, excellent, excellent, so we’re going to try making this a little harder, by going a littler faster and slower, come on. Oh I’ve really got his attention. This is beautiful. If your dog is focused on you and let you set the tone for the walk, be sure to constantly positively reinforce that. Good boy, good puppy, Barto, good. So that’s how to teach your puppy to walk on a leash. Now if these techniques don’t work for you be sure to check out perhaps one of the videos on heeling.
