Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and today we’re going to talk about puppies. So let’s talk about what to do before you even get a dog. Now most people pick a dog with their hearts. They pick the first dog that appeals to them, but that’s not necessarily the best way to go about it. When you choose a dog make sure that you’re able to give it what it needs, enough exercise and a safe home. So research the breeds that you’re looking at. The shelters are full of wonderful, wonderful dogs and it’s a really good idea to consult a trainer and go with him to the shelter to help you pick out a dog. In general you don’t necessarily want the most confident puppy in the litter, they’re confident for a reason, and you also don’t want to pick the puppy, who is cowering in the corner that could be a serious problem later in life. Pick the puppies that are the older dogs who gravitate towards you, towards people, not necessarily the ones that are completely obsessed with all the other dogs. Now before you bring your dog home make sure you have the set up in your home ready for the dog. We’re going to go on and talk about some of the equipment and the tools and how to start training your puppy right, right from the start.
