Learn How to Score & Win at Scrabble
Hi! My name is Andy Strohl and on behalf of Expert Village, in this clip we will be discussing word formation on the Scrabble board. Don’t forget to check out my website at www.strohldigital.com. Okay as we had just previously inspected, we laid down the word give, we passed to the left, play goes to the left and our opponent also laid down a word. We are going to take a look at the board now and discuss exactly how one should play words on the Scrabble board, what is allowed and what is not. Okay so you see as we discussed earlier, give was placed down on the board; that yielded 6 points. There was no special spot underneath either of the letters. My opponent placed oven. Notice again we are building horizontally and vertically. There is no diagonal building; can’t build words diagonally like that in Scrabble. Then it was my turn. After drawing squares, I placed down me. This yielded 5, 6, 7, and 8. Remember to look under the tiles. There is a triple letter score there so it was 5, 6, 7 plus 3 which is 10 points. Again, these are very simple examples of words you can use in Scrabble and how to place them on the board. My opponent then put this word down. This was a vertical word; went 4, 5 and now at this particular instance, the opponent does not get the triple letter score. His letter was not placed on the triple letter score. It was my letter that was placed and so he just builds on that. So as you can see there aren’t any special spots here, any double word scores or letter score magnifications for these spots so he just ends up with 4, 5, 6, 7 points. That is very important to know that you cannot hit that triple letter score or even this triple word score, double word score more than the original time it is used.
