How to Stretch the Neck with Shiatsu Massages

RICHARD NEIL: So continuing on with the neck, I'm lifting Sarah's head and I'm actually going to be stretching it, putting my hand here, just remind her to let go, and I'm carrying her as trust exercise here, and I'm actually just stretching the neck. Stretching it straight, use your whole weight to pull back, gripping with my fingertips underneath the hairline, stretching her neck, and do a little bit of a side stretch here, gripping underneath with my hand, putting my palm on one shoulder, stretching away, creating that space there. It's very easy for the practitioner here because I'm just leaning on my own body, but it can be very intense for the recipient. You feel this enormous stretch here. We've already loosened it up a lot with the massage strokes in this area. So the body already has a kind of a trust thing going, saying "It's okay. We're in good hands. I can let go." Make sure you finish this with a stretch right down the middle. Make sure we're balanced and even. You can actually look at the person's shoulders and see if one is hunching up more than the other, which is normal. Most people have one foot longer than the other or one hand, one arm, one longer than the other, and we tend to accentuate one side of our body more than the other side. But with the full body massage, we should be evening things out just a little bit, and just slowly let the head go. And when we return, I'll wrap up our session.
