How to Cut Tile

I’m Lee; I have a degree in architecture, about ten years experience in the construction field, and we are laying a diagonal countertop today. And we have to go out and get ourselves a wet saw. A wet saw is just- it just means that the blade is cooled by water. You have a little pump that you submerge down in there. This part raises up; you want to fill the water almost up to the top edge of the inset. It’s going to get filthy- there’s nothing you can do about it, really. And then you have a sliding tray that you set your size on, and it’s cut by the blade, right here. If it ever stops spitting water out here or in the back, you need to stop using it because it will just burn up real quick.

And what you want to do- I never use the laid out measurements- unless I’m doing four thousand square feet of tile- then the measurements if they’re off are not that important. If they’re off, you just shift some of the tile over. But on this, it is somewhat important. So you measure off the side of the blade. And you never want to push on the blade and bend it or anything, but we’re doing…this tile is one and 5/8ths, so we want to pull it in just a little bit. And then, slide this bar up against the tile, and just tighten it down hand tight. And then of course, you want to measure twice and cut once, especially with tile. And don’t ever, just buy enough tile to do your project- because you will break tiles, tiles will come broken, and the whole nine yards.

You just turn on your tile saw, and you wait until water starts spewing up on your tile. And if it doesn’t, I’ll show you what to do. And then you just…

Just scoot it over, depending on how…Now, if you want it to look real good, see how this cut edge is a lot sharper than this outside edge. So if you want it to look right, you should always have one edge with the…rounded. Or have them both with cut edges. And just start over again.

And that is how you would cut the tile for your countertop.
