Peruvian Greetings & Etiquette: Travel Tips

SONJIA CUHER: On behalf of Expert Village, this is Sonjia Cuher. Let's talk about customs. It's very polite to greet people, giving them a kiss in the cheek and you say "Ola! Como estas? And usually you kiss our men or you kiss our women, and it's okay. But remember, men don't kiss each other. Immediately that's a weird sign. Sorry, but that's our society. Another thing that's very important is you know you always have to be polite, say thank you for everything, say please "por favor." You know you're going to go an extra mile. People are going to give you back smiles. It will be really awesome if you are a gentleman, a true gentleman, and open the door when you exit the taxi, when you enter a hotel or things like that. In general, everybody will appreciate it and let say you'll come to an elderly lady with a heavy load and you decide to help her, that you know--that's it, you have a friend for life. Remember one thing, it's not customary to tip, but let's not forget, this is a really good custom. So if you there and you buy anything interesting be generous. Whatever, your tip is not as much. So go ahead and that way you're going to be part of Peru and you're going to feel right at home.
