Staying Healthy when Traveling in Peru

SONJIA CUHER: On behalf of Expert Village this is Sonjia Cuher. Make sure you take your medicine. If you have a prescription, you know you just have to. You can get basically anything you want in Peru in any pharmacy but if you are a little bit unsure about what is exactly that you may be getting, I would recommend to take yours. How to stay healthy? It's very very simple. Like I was saying the food, try, I would at all cost not to drink tap water. For some reason our tap water is unsanitary then avoid greens, unwashed fruit you know because you may get diarrhea, uncertain complications that you will definitely be unknowing and it will-- basically you will have such a hard time because you only have few times, few days there while in Peru and you don't want to spend all those days being just sick in bed. The highlands by the name you know as you can tell the altitude is quite high so once you get to Lima, you can approach any pharmacy and ask them for something that will help you with the altitude sickness. I know you can get some, you know, some type of medicine here and buy prescription medicine but you can buy that very inexpensive there, and also drink lots of water. That's the trick that not everybody knows, drink lots of water, and just eat not--don't eat anything that heavy, you need you let your body be able to just acclimitate to the altitude and just make sure that you rest if you go to the altitude. If you go to the jungle, one thing, it's very important avoid mosquito bites. I don't know how you are going to be able to do that but try to avoid it at all costs. I am not environmentalist, it's not safe to get all the DEET but believe it or not even though I'm from Peru, I take like 100% DEET because I don't want to be sick in bed.
