How to Fly with a Dog on an Airplane

Hi! This is Elise McMahon for Expert Village and we’re talking today about traveling with your dog. Lot of times you might be traveling within the country or outside the country traveling internationally but either way you can travel with your dog, it’s not as easy as it used to be with all the new regulations but you can still travel with your dog relatively easily. First thing you wanted to do is make sure that you have an airline approved crate. The crate we’ve got here is a similar car traveling crate it’s a wire crate. This is not the kind of crate that you’ll be traveling with in an airplane it’s got to be an airline approved crate they are plastic typically with air holes on the sides and vent on the door. You want to make sure that you get the sizing right. This will be a fairly large crate to go on an airplane. The airplane crates are usually a little bit more rounded and you can see in here that she has got plenty of room to lie down usually the airline regulations is that the dog has room to lie down, stand up and turn around. So check that out when you will buy your crate make sure the crate size will fit. When you make your airline reservations you need to tell them the size typically the size of the crate and the weight of the crate with the dog in it. You also want to make sure when you make your reservation that you let the airline know that you will be traveling with the dog because often times there’s limitations of how many dogs that they can take on the plane. Find out where your dog is going to be traveling. Is he going to be in a separate cold, will your dog is your dog small enough or if it’s a young dog is it young and small enough the right size to be traveling with you. If you’re going to have your dog travel with you on the plane in the passenger section you’re going to need a different kind of crate that are usually soft crates that are typically the Sherpa Bag is one company but you’re going to want to find out the maximum size dimensions that the airline will allow you to have and make sure your dog or puppy will fit in to that. Also you want to make sure that your dog has permanent identification on him, microchip tattooed, microchip is pretty common nowadays. Also make sure they have their collar and their tags on them. So there’s identification on the dog when you’re traveling.
