Drums for "La Villa Strangiato" by Rush: Beat 1

JOEL SIEGEL: All right, so this beat. Currently the name of the game is just going to really work your coordination between your right foot and your left foot, okay? Because you're getting this hi-hat lifts. For instance, beat one, the downbeat, that ride into it, you gotta hi-hat lift on the downbeat of one and it's actually getting closed on the "e" of one. What does that mean? At sixteenth note, we break it down one-e-and-a. Okay, so it's like it's the first sixteenth note after a downbeat, we're going to close the hi-hat, okay? So if I play the first beat, it also happens on the "a" you have open hi-hat and then it gets closed on the two. So, it sounds like this. If I take out my hands, I'll just have. One, two, three, four, one-e-a, two, right? The kick drum was playing on one and the "a" of one, one-e-and-a, okay? The hi-hat is coming down on "e" and two, one-e-and-a, two. One-e-and-a--sorry. one-e-and-a, two, one-e-and-a, two. Okay? The reason that's happening is because that's where want to cut off your lifts, round the sixteenth, just you want to have sixteenth note in length of that lift sound. One-e-and-a, one-e-and-a, one-e-and-a, one-e-and-a, one-e-and-a, okay? So one-e-and-a. Okay? one-e-and-a. Okay? So that's what's going to be happening for the rest of the beat kind of like, that's beat one and we'll talk about continuing onto beat two
