Drums for "The New Pollution" by Beck: Beats 1 & 2

JOEL SIEGEL: All right. So this beat--first we'll just kinda--I'll just talk about like getting the loose hi-hat sound. You don't want to just like leave your foot off the hi-hat. You wanna--I mean, you do want them open, but you don't want them to go all the way up because it will--that's not the sound that you're going for at all. The sound that you want is just a nice--you're kinda going for--it's hard to hit--down here I've got this angled a little bit, but what you're going for is maybe--I don't know, really just like a few millimeters is the ideal thing. That's kind of hard to do at first but that's what you're shooting for, you know, maybe like half a centimeter between the cymbals. And that allows them--when you're striking on them that'll give them kind of the opportunity to brush up against each other and get that kind of extended sustained sizzle sound. Still going right? All right, so this kind of all that's going on in beat one. You also have the kick just doing that--the downbeat of one. Okay? So that's beat one, and beat two is kind of similar. So the first two beats are pretty simple. All right? So we're going to the next clip and then we'll kind of get into like what's--you know what's different about this beat.
