Drums for "When the Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin: Part 5

JOEL SIEGEL: All right. So we're kinda talking about the sixteenth notes and how they're--the sixteenth notes in the kick drum are interacting with the hi-hat with the eighth notes, okay? So you probably noticed just from that very first beat, beat one, you have--right? Right there, you're playing two notes on each instrument but they're not lining up. You're playing the first sixteenth note and the second sixteenth note here. So what's going to end up happening, like if I were just to play with those with my hands, and this represents the bass drum, this represents my right hand, my hi-hat right here. All right? So that first one, they're hitting together. That second one, the kick is just playing along. It just kinda sneaks in there halfway between that next hi-hat beat. All right? The same thing happens on that uh of two. Right? You have one-and--sorry, we'll go two-and-uh. Okay? So it kinda goes between the hi-hat on the sixteenth note upbeats, okay? So this can take a while especially when it's in the kick drum. This can take a while to kinda work up the coordination, okay? And especially with the doubles too, they kinda just compounds it but this is something worth working up. So kinda check that out, work on that, getting that independence between your right hand and your right foot, and we'll finish off the beat in this next clip.
