JOEL SIEGEL: All right. So we know one and two, beats one and two so far. We've just got those snare downbeats: eighths in the hi-hat, beat one and a kick. Three and four, what's going on? The same story with the snare and the hi-hat: three-and, four-and, you got three, four-and, three-and, four-and, which means they'll both be hitting at the same on three and four so the downbeat of three and four. Hi-hat by itself on the upbeat of three and upbeat of four. Three-and, four-and. Three-and, four-and. The kick drum is actually going to join the hi-hat. It's going to play straight eights. It's going to play the downbeat of three, the upbeat of three, downbeat of four, upbeat of four. Three-and, four-and. Okay? So just like the hi-hat: three-and, four-and. Three-and, four-and. Put them together: three-and, four-and. Three-and, four-and. Add the snare on three and four: three-and, four-and. Three-and, four-and. Three-and, four-and. Okay. So the main thing I'm trying to communicate is these eighth notes and the kick. And in this next clip, we'll bring the beat together and we'll have our beat for "I Can't Help Myself".
