Foundation of the Beat for "I Can't Help Myself" on Drums

JOEL SIEGEL: All right. So we want to go ahead and get into our beat for this tune. This again is that kind of classic--one of the classic Motown sounds. Okay? So what's going on here? We've got our straight eighths on the hi-hat, one-and, two-and, three-and, four-and. We've got those quarters on the snare that are just driving: one, two, three, four. Okay? So those are our two--that's kind of the foundation of the beat. Okay, so we just have those two things going. All right? So the downbeats, your hands are hitting together; and then on the upbeats you just have that hi-hat going in the right hand, okay? All right? And then the rest of the work--and the rest of the sound is more defined by what's going on the bass drum. So we'll start to talk about that and breakdown the bass drum, what's going on in each individual beat in these next few clips.
