Drums for "Grazin' in the Grass" by Hugh Masekela: Beat 4

JOEL SIEGEL: All right. So we've got our first three beats of our "Grazin' in the Grass" beats. Beat four, all that's happening, you've got your right hand that's continuous, steady eighth notes, because you have one-and, two-and, three-and, four-and, okay? So you've got the downbeat of four and the upbeat four in the right hand. And then this is where your foot comes in, your left foot. You're going to do just the high hat, a high hat click with your left foot closing the high hat, getting that sound which is different, importantly, than that. That's going to happen on beat four, okay? So the downbeat of four. What else is playing? You have your eighth notes in your ride cymbal. So, you're going to have the downbeat of four at the same time. Okay. And then you also have--what happens right after that is an upbeat in the kick drum, so you have the upbeat of four in the kick drum. What that means is, just beat four with the high hat and the kick, you have one, two, three, one, two, three, one, two, three, okay? So you have that interaction. And what's happening in relationship to the ride, you have your downbeat hitting at the same time, your right hand and your left foot, and then you have your right foot and your right hand hitting also at the same time on that upbeat. Okay? So the steady ride pattern with beat four sounds like this. Two, three, four. All right? So there's your beat four. We'll go ahead and tie all those--all four of those beats together in this next clip to get our beat for "Grazin' in the Grass."
