JOEL SIEGEL: All right. Welcome back. We're going to do a beat now from a tune called "Grazin' in the Grass." This was on the pop charts for Hugh Masekela who is part of kind of the Afropop movement in the late '60s and '70s. If you don't know much about Afropop, I highly encourage you to get into it. This was on the pop charts in the states, so it's one of the more Americanized kinda tunes. But there's a lot of really cool stuff out there to check out: Fela Kuti, Hugh Masekela, just a couple of names for you. So this beat involves just a little bit of kind of extra attention to the coordination and beat placement and kinda alternates the feel of the backbeat a little bit but it's very simple. And then the other thing is that it also incorporates the ride. It's one of the beats that sit on the ride and so you kinda have some freedom to do a little bit of high hat work. All right? So we'll break the beat down, see what's going on in each section, in each instrument, and each beat in the next few clips.
