How to Take Large Party Orders as a Waiter

Hi! My name is Leslie Moselle and we're here at Mickey Quinn's in Seminole, Florida and on behalf of Expert Village, this is how to be a successful server. Not all of your tables when you're working at a restaurant are going to be nice tables of 2 or 3. Sometimes you're going to have larger parties that at some point can get pretty overwhelming. The best thing you can do is be a great server and to be prepared is to just try to layout your tables and your seating prior to starting to actually talk to your customer and take orders. The last thing you want to do is walk to the table and just be really flustered, not prepared, and unorganized and everything goes wrong. What I like to do is I like to get a head count. As soon as I know the total people I'm going to have, I'm going to go ahead and put that down on a piece of paper. I'm actually going to look at my paper and I'm going to number. Say I have 10 customers. I'm going to write down 10 seats. Number one is going to be the top of my clock and I'm going to work clockwise around the table taking orders. What I'm going to do is I'm going to ask whatever their order is and I'm going to list it from 1-10. Remember that I'm going clockwise around the table. If there is a lady, then you want to start with the lady and work your way clockwise around the table. This will help you keep organized and you'll always remember who has what drink and who has what meal. That is a great way to keep organized when you have larger parties. Once you get your food, you can place your food on the tray in the same direction as you've actually taken down the order on your paper. That's a great way to handle large parties.
