How to Tie a Square Knot for Sailing

A square knot is used to tie two lines of the same size together such as the line I have here. So the easiest way that I remember is you have your left line and your right line. Right over left, twist. Left over right, twist. And this is what a square knot looks like. So you'll have two loops that are interlocked. The next knot we're going to do is a sheet bend. Sheet bend is for tying two lines of different diameters together. Start by creating a loop. Take the second line through the loop, around the backside and then back underneath itself and then tighten.
