Increasing a Dog's Range of Motion with Massage

Hi, this is Mary with expertvillage.com and today we're going to be talking about range of motion. This is most important if you're working with an animal that has been injured or who has arthritis. This is again one of these things you should not do unless you've okayed it with your vet to do it. And please make sure you're doing it correctly and gently because this is one of the things that you can do that can harm your animal instead of helping them. With the range of motion, to start with the forelegs, you're just going to gently pull out, you're going to go up and in and back down. If the animal resists you at any time, that's kind of your cue that it might hurt a little bit so you need to be very careful and back off. Same thing with the back legs. You're going to bring them up, you're going to support the knee, push gently till you stretch and then you're going to bring it around, back up again, you're going to check their ankle, bob it up and down a few times. Don't try to wiggle it side to side, it doesn't go that way. Same thing with their wrists, up and down, never try to wiggle side to side.
