How to Massage a Dog's Side

Hi, this is Mary with expertvillage.com and today we're going to talk about massaging down the sides of your animal. So again if you can do this with the animal standing up, it's probably the best thing because then you can get both sides at once but if you have an injured animal or you have an older animal that just doesn't like to stand, then you're going to have to do it when they're laying down. So when you do the sides, one thing you have to remember is no pressure to speak of. You're going to feel like you're just barely hitting the surface but you're not. You just do it, nice calm strokes that we've talked about before. In human beings it's called an eplorage stroke and that's what you're using on this. And you're just going to go very slowly, this is a good time to notice lumps, here, here, you notice if it's warm for some reason where it shouldn't be. What these strokes do down the sides of the animal is it helps to start stimulating the organs that are beneath the rib cage. And for older animals especially, it's really good to kind of hit the chest area with this same sort of stroke because that helps to stimulate the heart.
