How to Do a Backward Wiggle on Ice Skates

Hi, I'm Simone Fischer, and I'm here at Clearwater Ice Arena, in sunny Clearwater, Florida. On behalf of Expert Village, lets look at Charlene Johnson-Dodge. A skill that we teach our skaters is backward wiggles. It's very important for the skaters to have, their shoulders nice and square, and their bodies upright. Their head should be facing forward, and looking straight up. Often a beginning skater wants to look down at the ice like this, it's very important that they keep their head up. When they look down at the ice this way, they tend to tip their weight forward and their skate, making the backward wiggles, almost impossible to complete. Keeping the head up, shoulders are square, and our arm's are out in front of us, with one hand, on top of the other. We then bend our knee's slightly, take our hips, and rotate our hips side to side. The side to side motion looks like this, and the hip, arms are out in front. When we put all of it together, we get a backward wiggle, that looks like this. That is a backward wiggle.
