JEANETTE WHITE: Hi. I'm Jeanette White for Expert Village and Piper's Quilts & Comforts located in Salt Lake City, Utah in Sugarhouse. Today, we've been doing paper piece log cabin, and as you can see I've gotten my block all finished. Now, I'm ready to trim away the outside and tear away the paper, and then the next step is I'll be joining all my blocks together to make a spectacular quilt. This is a wonderful favorite pattern that's been around for a long, long time. So my next step is I'm going to turn this over and I'm going to locate the outside parameter line. Now, we've had people who have come in and assumed that this line was our cutting line. Don't make that mistake. It's not the end of the world, but it's kind of a drag. So what you want to do is you want to line up your quarter-inch mark on your ruler with that black line right there, and you're going to trim away your excess and you're going to do that all the way around. The next step is we're going to tear away the paper, and that's where the vellum really pays off, even though it's a little bit more expensive. By the way, we have these blocks here at the store. You can make your own or you can purchase them, but it's a sure good way to make a log cabin. So the next step is we're going to start tearing away the paper, and this is actually my favorite part. I like to use something to kind of score this and you can use the handle of your scissors or your awl, anything that works. And I'm going to tear away this paper, and this is usually the part where I get a big bowl of ice cream and a good movie, and I just make a big mess and tear away all this paper. But it's a pretty fun job and it goes pretty quickly. And if you've got kids that are hanging out with nothing to do then sometimes this is a fun job for them to do. But you'll just continue to do this in the same fashion, and before you know it, you've got this absolutely perfect log cabin that you didn't have to be so terribly careful with and it will fool everybody.
