How to Use a Hera

JEANETTE WHITE: Hi. I'm Jeanette White for Expert Village and Piper's Quilts & Comforts. And today, we're going to be talking about using a hera. A hera is a tool that is not very well known but is really one of my favorites. A lot of times when you're doing marking on a quilt top so that you can prepare it to do your hand quilting, the problem is, is by the time you going to mark on your quilt so that you can see it, it becomes very problematic in how to remove it. This little tool is very inexpensive. We have these here at Piper's, and it is called the Hera and it's just a little plastic tool but I want to show you how this works. You can do this on mixed colors, plaids, polka dots, whatever or any solids, and the line will show up equally as well. So, we're just going to push this and you can see here I've gotta line that I can follow and I have not damaged my fabric and if I want to remove that, I can just take a little spritz bottle and just dampen it and the line is gone. The other side of this is very pointed and you can use that for doing circular designs or using it in conjunction. You can see this line follows right along here with a stencil. This is really one of the best tools I've ever found for making marks that you can see on anything and there is no problem in removing it. And that's how you mark for a quilt top.
