How to Braid Thread

JEANNETTE WHITE: Hi. I'm Jeannette White on behalf of Expert Village and Piper's Quilts & Comforts in Sugarhouse. Today we prepare this thread so that we can use longer lengths and it gives it a little more strength than we did it with our paraffin wax and ironing it in the last segment. Now, we're going to do the last step so that we can actually begin to use this. And I'm going to insert a pair of scissors under at the very end and cut it free. Carefully, I'm going to lift it off and you can see here, I've got a little bend in this. That part is going to be sacrificed and it's very little so we're not going to worry about it, I'm just going to cut that little interruption off on that end and on this end. The next thing we're going to do is you need a buddy to hold it and then we're going to divide this into three segments because we're going to braid it. Now, you want to handle this pretty gingerly and the best tool I have found for getting it to behave and get into these three equal bundles is a table fork. So you can see here, I'm just separating this, and using the fork to smooth out this kind of pesky little threads that are in here, so that I can begin braiding this. Now, I've got these three bundles and I'm going to braid this just the way you would a little girl's hair. And when we get done, you're going to have precut, pre-waxed lengths of thread that are going to sail right through the end of your needle. No more cutting and spitting and pinching to get your needle threaded. So, you can see here, we're almost down to the end and when I want to get a thread free, I just isolate one thread and pull it out and away I go. And that's how you wax your thread so you can use longer lengths.
