How to Use Cones to Run a Post Route

VINCENT JAMAL: Hi, I'm Vincent on behalf of Expert Village. One of the things that Brian can do to help his accuracy with running routes is just simply by laying down cones, and then he can mark off his running. This is where his mark could be, and then he can mark off wherever his angle is that he wants to emulate until the point of the ball gets to him. So, if he needs to run a skinny post, then he can run this and practice this with the cones rather than just run it blindly and not be too sure exactly where he's going. So, Brian, go ahead and run this pattern of cones for me. Set, go. You can see, he's got a clear lane as to where the ball will be going, and it allows him run it a much crisper pattern. When he gets to his first cone, he can make a sharp cut and he doesn't really have to guess. Now, when he comes off the ball during game time, he knows that, in his mind, 10 yards will be 5 to 6 steps for him. It's just an explosion. It will be natural. It will allow him to get his footwork down, work with his plant foot, which one he's going to explode. And this is for all patterns, not just the post pattern. So, if he's running an out, he knows how far it is to get out, which foot he's going to explode with, and take his direction to get the ball.
