Audio Basics for Making a Digital Video

Hi, welcome back. Let's talk about audio. George Lucas said it best "50% of the theatre experience is sound." Most videographers miss sound. they take it for granted. First and foremost, you want to monitor your audio when you are recording. Even if it's a cheap pair of headphones, it doesn't matter. Always monitor it. The second thing you want to understand is, on your camera, what kind of microphone do you have? There are certain patterns on microphones that you need to understand. Make sure you understand how your audio is being recorded on your camera. One thing to remember about digital video and audio is it is very unforgiving if the levels are too hot. A lot of cameras, especially professional, have meters that show you the levels of the audio. Monitor those and listen very carefully. You don't want them to peak at zero. If you get distorted audio, there's almost no way to get rid of it at all in editing. Also to consider an additional microphone. I am being mic'd right now with a lapel microphone, which is a must when getting people at a distance and you don't necessarily have a big boom. That's the next mic you might want to think about. A big boom mic is very important for scenes and it means you have to have an additional audio guy. It's very important to invests into different quality microphones for what you are doing. The next segment we are going to talk about it lighting. Lighting is very important to digital video. And if you want to know more tips about audio, go to my website at pllightstudios.com
