How to Get to Know Your Child Care Provider

Hi! This is Patti Billings. I am a certified pediatric nurse practitioner on behalf of expertvillage.com. In this clip, we are going to talk a little bit about how parents can interact with their childcare providers, whether it’s a day care center or individual home so, they can maximize their developmental learning experiences that they are receiving. One of the barriers to a good early childhood care is that traditionally, in this country, childcare workers are not paid very well. Their compensation is very poor, and although some of them have some education in this area and certainly have some skills and ability I think finding the best childcare that you can afford is good and to be desired. For some people that’s not going to be something that they can do and I think that some of the things that you can do especially as children get older if you don’t need child care, #1 you can set up a co-op with other families, so that children can socialize and have some play times together. I have seen some where parents actually take turns and have some kind of an educational experience plan at their home for four or five other children that age; and because it’s a trade off situation, that would cost a family nothing. You know, some people go two or three half mornings a week to a childcare center to supplement what they do. At that point, I think it’s really important that you know what the other people taking care of your child are teaching them, so that you can experience that. For instance if they have read a book about zoo animals, it might be nice for you to plan a family outing to the zoo, so children can actually take what they have seen in the book and experience at first hand and then of course, there are programs for people like Head Start for people who qualify for Head Start that do a very nice job of readying children for kindergarten at a very low or no cost at all.
