Hi! This is Patti Billings. I am a certified pediatric nurse practitioner on behalf of expertvillage.com. In this clip, we are going to talk about when you should keep your child home from child care or visiting other people or even children who are school age. These principles apply all of those children. If a child is running a fever over 101 they should stay home, they obviously have a draining eye, a draining ear and a sore throat or a rash. Those are things that you would want to get checked out before you send your child to school because they have things that could obviously be contagious. I think the other consideration is whether the child feels well enough to participate in the activities. A child, who is feeling poorly even if it is a viral illness and the childcare provider may say it’s alright if they come, may feel too poorly to really participate and have a good day. Ear infections are not contagious and a child who feels well enough to go to childcare certainly can go to a child care with an ear infection. If you are unsure about sending your child to childcare or school, it’s best that you make an appointment with the pediatrician and ask them if this child can go to day care or to school. For children who have a bacterial infection and their physician has placed them on an antibiotic, they can go to school generally after two days on that antibiotic.
