How to Begin Painting a Food Tray

DAVID CLEMEN: Hi, I'm David Clemen on behalf Expert Village. And today, we are going to paint a wooden food tray. Okay, now that I have this drawn out basically where I want it, notice that I'm inside the tray first and I will work my way out as far as the painting goes. And then I will have to let this dry and then I'll paint the back last, but we'll get to that later. So what I mean by drawing our painting with a light paint, I just want to go and kind of trace what I've drawn with just a really light coat of this, I'm just going to use a light--this is a cadmium yellow, and I can actually take some white over here. It's basically, I'm doing the foundation of this painting in one of the lightest colors I can kind of mix together, and then I'm going to build darker. You know, it's easier to go from light to dark than it is from dark to light. So I'm just going to come in and loosely trace the banana in this whitening oil. Okay. And if it's not spreading like you like then just add a little water and that will help with the movement of the paint over the wood. And I come in here, do this. Tracing more bananas. And you can--even if the color of the apple is not this color, since it's so light you can trace it with this really light white-and-yellow mixture. Just kind of come in here, just tracing around. And that is painting with light paint.
