Hi! This is Patti Billings. I am a certified pediatric nurse practitioner on behalf of expertvillage.com. In this clip we are going to talk a little bit about safety and your child when they do field trips or excursions with their childcare center or even in their school. Field trips offer more opportunity for accidents and some exposures to things that children would not get in the childcare center. If they are walking, they are pedestrians on the street and it is a good learning experience for them to learn how to be safe on the street and follow traffic lights and directions. Again, often you have a group of children with fewer adults than there are children and so it is important that they have enough adults present to adequately supervise children, and the younger children need more possibly one to two per child and as children get older that number can be decreased. It’s nice if parents could volunteer to go on trips because they can number one, see what their child is learning on this trip and provide some extra supervision and safety. I think trip should be taken in buses or vehicles that are approved for child transportation with a driver who is licensed accordingly, like a school bus or a school bus driver. There are large seated vans that are not as safe for children to travel in and if you have parents driving you have variety of backgrounds as far as driving abilities. So it’s best if they can be transported by a licensed driver in a vehicle that is licensed for a child safety. As always, you should be aware of what your children are doing, so that you have the final decision to make about your child’s educational experiences and safety. With a variety of activities you could require several different items for safety. I think for children who are going on an outing, say to the park or to a swimming pool, sunscreen of course is important and adequate cover like a hat and a little shirt to put on after their experience in the pool or wherever so, they don’t get sun-burnt. If they are going to like a museum or building type experience, of course that would change and then you would want your children to have shoes that are safe, not flip flop sandals, things that when they are walking they are not going fall down the stairs.
