Taking Care of Tambura

The tambura has to be stored carefully and maintained carefully to last for a long time. And the best way for general storage is to stand it up. On occasion, you may see the instrument laid down on the floor and that's usually just for tuning purposes or for a few minutes to go away from the instrument and come back. But this is not a good way to store it. Now, when you're standing the instrument up, sometimes the gourd on the bottom is not exactly flat and there's a little bit of opportunity for the instrument to fall. So to do away with that, you can do one of two things. You can either stand the instrument up in a corner so that the head actually touches the wall. Or, with this instrument, we have a ring that was formed precisely for this instrument. This ring fits underneath the curvature of the gourd, with this edge fitting on the edge of the ring. You kind of have to snug it down on that support portion of the bridge and just kind of move it around until it stands there and it's nice and steady. If you're transporting these instruments, you need a special case to transport. I don't recommend transporting in hot or cold weather. These instruments are very much effected by temperature.
