Tambura for Meditation

An important aspect of playing the tambura is to understand that the instrument playing is very much tied to meditation in order to maintain your rhythm. And it allows you then to play better with other instruments. So let's talk a little bit about breathing and technique with the tambura and how that establishes rhythm. This is an exercise in breathing to maintain the rhythm of the instrument as you're playing. You do not want to fluctuate at all, either accelerating or slowing down, in the speed of playing. So, on the in breath, hold and exhale. Inhale, hold, exhale. So, in truth, playing the tambura is a state of meditation. As you perform, you are gradually slipping into a meditative state. And at the same time, you're maintaining your awareness of your surroundings and you?re playing.
