Practicing the Tambura

So, in any playing of an instrument, there's a certain amount of respect and a certain amount of right practice involved. The Indian instruments, since they came out of a sacred tradition, they are infused at the time of their creation by their craftsmen with what is considered to be a certain amount of divinity. An energy that is in all things in the universe. And so, oftentimes, we start by bringing our hands to namaste and bowing to the instrument. And, in so doing, we are also bowing to ourselves and that connection between ourselves and the instrument is so important. The other thing that we want to do out of respect is not to point the bottoms of our feet at the instrument or step over the instrument when it's in a prone position like this. In the beginning, you want to go very slow with your practice and you may only spend five or ten minutes in your practice. Whatever you do, do it well, even if it's just for a short time and there you will find the greatest benefits from your practice.
