ALAN MARK LIGHTNER: Hi. I'm Alan Lightner with Expert Village. We're talking today about playing the steelpans and fitting into various musical situations or ensembles. And as the steeldrummer in certain ensembles, you have certain roles. Sometimes you have the role of playing the melody of the song [PLAYS MELODY]; sometimes you have the role in the ensemble of accompanying other members that are playing that are playing the melodies [PLAYS ACCOMPANIMENT]. When you're experimenting with different ways of accompaniment, one technique that we like to use is called an arpeggio. We've talked about playing just chords [PLAYS CHORDS], another way we can do this is playing an arpeggio when you play three different notes but in a sequence. So we talked about that C scale which is C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C. While if I skip every other note, we get--that's how we got to this first chord. We skip this note and add those to that note with it, we got that chord. While if I do the 1st, 3rd, skip the 4th and then do the 5th , we're getting an arpeggio at that point when we're playing these notes in sequence, and then we get to the 8th note or back to the beginning [PLAYS ARPEGGIO]. That's how we build that arpeggio; we use that 1st, the 3rd, the 5th, and then back to the beginning or the 8th; 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8. The 1st, the 3rd, the 5th, back to the 8th [PLAYS ARPEGGIO]. That's another way we can outline the harmony and used that to accompany other musicians that are playing the melody [PLAYS ARPEGGIOS]. That's how we use arpeggios; to accompany other people playing melodies.
