Hi, I'm Ann Kennedy on behalf of Expert Village and we'll be looking at correcting common problems in children. What young readers need to know. Let's read, recap these sessions and just double check that we understand what young readers need to know. They need to know where to start in the title. At the top left and go across. They need to know that reading is turning the page and you will always move left to right. And how to move left to right across the page. In this particular example don't let them get confused, I can read and then I'm thinking they can go to this page. Tell them to always look at the top and to continue to go down to the very bottom of the page because there may be more words. As they start taking tests in 2nd and 3rd grade, it's a concept that a lot of children don't pass their test just because they haven't trained their eyes to go all the way down. So make sure they understand top to bottom before we go to the next page. Top, left to right, bottom left to right, then we read the next page. And how to point to the title. The children will be asked in a lot of your national standard test, where's the title? Can they point to the title? Who's the author? You practice, you've shown them now for several years. They'll be able to do it just like that, the title, the author, left and right, top and bottom. The concept of first, next and last in a sentence, as we learn to turn the page, what's the next page, the next word? You've taught them that wonderful, wonderful concept that they will use over and over again. The concept of a sentence, we've learned that and where the spacing is and the letters of the alphabet. Young readers need to know this to get through school and this is what they'll be looking at in administration statewide and nationally and you've been able to teach them by applying some of these strategies in a fun and wonderful way.
